Traditional Concrete vs. Gunite

Here are some facts about concrete that may help you make a choice:

• Concrete consists of a blend of cement, sand, aggregates like crushed stone or gravel, and water. It is often pre-mixed before being transported to the construction site, where it is then poured or molded into the required shapes.
• Concrete is typically poured into pre-made molds or forms that define the pool's structure. While concrete is known for its durability and strength, it may not be as robust as gunite.
• Concrete is strong and durable but may have slightly lower strength than gunite. The pouring process used with concrete is more susceptible to cracks or weaknesses.
• Although concrete can be shaped or molded to some extent, the reliance on pre-formed molds can impose design limitations when compared to the more flexible application of gunite.

Gunite Pools

• The dry mix of cement and sand is shot through a hose at high pressure and mixes with water as it's being applied.
• The application process used makes for a dense and solid structure. It's less likely to crack than concrete and can adapt well to various shapes and designs.
• Because it's fired from a nozzle, gunite offers more flexibility in terms of design and shape. Since it's sprayed on, it can conform to any shape or contour desired, thus allowing the designer to be more creative.
